Why might divorce benefit a woman more than a man?

On Behalf of | May 17, 2022 | Divorce |

Once upon a time, people pitied women whose husbands left them. They wondered how they would cope with the lack of a husband to support them or do manly tasks such as hunting dinner, changing a lightbulb or cutting the lawn.

Throughout history, plenty of women have shown that they do just fine without a partner. This is now truer than ever, as modern women are more likely to have their own careers rather than be consigned to the kitchen.

Statistics show that women now initiate most divorces

Why is it that women file for divorce twice as much as men? Here are some of the reasons found:

They have already tried all they can to save the marriage

Women are, on the whole, more in tune with their feelings than the average man.  Often the woman is the first to notice things are not going well and the first to try and do something about it. If the husband does not take the hint, the woman may put up her hands and say enough is enough before the husband has even realized anything is wrong.

Divorce can increase their opportunities

Often the husband has a well-paying job, and the woman sacrifices time and potential to do things such as cook, run the house, or run errands for her spouse. She may decide that freeing herself from this support role is the step she needs to follow her dreams and pursue a better future than the one she has.

These are generalizations, of course, and there are situations where things are the opposite. Yet the facts remain that women file for divorce more frequently than men.

If you are thinking of filing for divorce or your spouse has already done so, seek legal help to understand what you need to do next.
