About Our Attorneys

At Melinda Weerts Law, PLLC, our lawyers limit our practice solely to family law matters. Our founding attorney, Melinda Weerts, has more than two decades of experience handling family law cases for clients located throughout the Fargo area.

A native North Dakotan, and graduate of the University of North Dakota, attorney Melinda Weerts began her legal career in 1996, after graduating from Cornell Law School. Her decision to focus on family law was a natural one — as someone who has been both a single parent and a married parent, she understands the complications and challenges that divorce can create for a family.

10 Commandments of Family Law

  • The only truth your children need to know is that you both love them unconditionally, and that this isn’t their fault.
  • Take the high road — everyone wins when you do what’s best for your kids.
  • Negotiate but don’t capitulate — if you are being pushed toward something detrimental for your children, stand your ground.
  • You can only control yourself and how you respond. Don’t engage.
  • Do set up rules and responsibilities. Kids feel better when routine is continued.
  • You are still their parent — don’t be afraid to be one.
  • Disneyland is in California, not in your home. Don’t set up unreasonable expectations.
  • It is not their job to take care of you. Repeat that to them. Often.
  • Yelling is for sports — not court. Good lawyers strongly advocate without being disrespectful to opposing parties.
  • Fair is a place you go to get cheese curds. Aside from that, nothing in life is fair.
